A Postcard from Athens
On August 13, I went for a short trip to Athens to meet some family and friends. Athens is a great destination for weekend getaways, especially from Cyprus, since it’s only one hour and twenty minutes away.
Even though many Athenians were away for the long weekend, the city still had its signature buzz and liveliness, especially at night. With the traffic being much more bearable than usual, we spent a night out at Gazi, a popular nightlife area in the centre of Athens, full of countless bars and clubs, each with their own distinctive identities. We sat at one of the many rooftop bars, sipping mojitos and enjoying a great view of the Acropolis.
We spent the rest of our time around the area of Nea Makri, a seaside resort surrounded by hills, located just outside of Athens. It was the perfect place to be in August, next to the sea but still with a cool breeze coming from the hills.
There are so many places to visit in Nea Makri and we just couldn’t resist trying to visit most of them! We started with a visit to the beach, where you can sit on the grass under a tree. After that, it was afternoon coffee at the port, a walk at the Nea Makri promenade just before sunset, a drink at one of the many beach bars of the area and after that, more drinks and dancing at Prova beach club!
As for food, of course I didn’t forget to mention it, I just saved the best for last! Whether it’s a cosy tavern downtown, a fish tavern by the sea or a quick kebab shop, there are so many ways to enjoy the world-famous cuisine of Greece!
On the whole, it was one of those full weekends that Athens really knows how to offer!
