Abu Dhabi sets sights on Saudi Arabia with road show

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has announced a road show through three cities within Saudi Arabia to increase visitor numbers from the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is the emirate’s fifth-largest international source market, according to TCA Abu Dhabi.

The road show will include stops in Jeddah on August 26, Riyadh on August 27 and Dammam on August 28. More than 20 stakeholders from Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector will make up the emirate’s delegation, including airlines, hotels, attractions, tour operators and DMCs.

“This is a physical illustration of the growing strategic importance of the vital Saudi source market to Abu Dhabi's immediate and long-term tourism objectives,” said Saudi Arabia country manager, TCA Abu Dhabi, Mubarak Al Shamisi.

Hotel guest arrivals in June 2012 increased year-on-year by 17 per cent, according to recent TCA Abu Dhabi figures. Saudi Arabian guests comprised of 6,661 across Abu Dhabi’s hotels and hotel apartments, marking a 57 per cent increase on the same month last year.

Furthermore, some 36,430 Saudi Arabian hotel guests stayed in Abu Dhabi's hotels and hotel apartments during the first sixth months of this year – a 36 per cent increase on the equivalent half-year in 2011.

“Geographic proximity is one of Abu Dhabi's many selling points to Saudi tourists," added Al Shamisi.

“As well as sharing borders, our two peoples are united in various aspects of our cultures. Abu Dhabi has become a home-away-from-home for thousands of Saudis eyeing short leisure breaks, cultural excursions and business trips in a familiar and nearby environment."

Travel options to and from Saudi Arabia provide for easier access, with improved air links from Saudi airports to Abu Dhabi International Airport. Abu Dhabi’s national airline, Etihad Airways, now operates 42 weekly services between Abu Dhabi and three Saudi cities: Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. In addition, Saudi Airlines operates daily services to Abu Dhabi from both Jeddah and Riyadh, while NAS Air operates a daily flight from Jeddah.

During the road show, TCA Abu Dhabi plans to inform and update trade representatives on recent additions to Abu Dhabi’s tourism proposition including new hotels and resorts, upcoming attractions such as Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, Yas Island and several events including Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition and Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“This is a carefully tailored opportunity for Abu Dhabi's tourism partners to build new business partnerships and enliven existing relationships in an exclusive and focused environment," added Al Shamisi.
