According to the newly-published International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) 2015 report, Athens achieved a new high, coming within the top 25 conference destinations globally.
Based on the number of conferences and conventions organised in the city in 2015, Athens moved up three places compared with the previous year. Specifically it moved from 27th place in 2014 to 24th globally. It is worth noting that Athens had gained 20 places, representing one of the most positive turn-arounds in the world.
In the European category of convention destinations, Athens climbed from 19th place in 2014 to 18th in 2015. According to ICCA, Athens saw 87 conferences organised in the destination in 2015, compared to 80 in 2014. Meanwhile, 57 per cent of conventions organised in Greece were hosted in the country’s capital.
Mayor of Athens, Giorgios Kaminis commented on Athens’ rising status as a convention destination: “This noteworthy performance is a result of the cooperation of all the stakeholders of our city, as well as the coordinated common actions which have been implemented over the last few years. The systematic collection of work that is being done at Athens Development and Tourism Promotion Company and the Athens Visitors and Convention Bureau is bearing fruit and is justifying all our efforts to strengthen Athens tourism economy.”
