Sharjah has been growing in popularity as a family tourist destination, enticing families from across the MENA region and beyond.
Offering a wide variety of shows, carnivals, parks, desert landscapes, scenic man-made lagoons and cultural hotspots, the emirate is capitalising on the potential of the family market and has made it a key pillar in the Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021. Under this pillar, initiatives such as distinct packages and offers are being specially tailored for family tourists.
Earlier on in the year, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) released figures which highlighted that during the first two months of 2015, hotels in Sharjah received 42,150 guests from Saudi Arabia alone, most of which were families.
Further emphasising the rising popularity of Sharjah among families, the emirate’s hotels reported 100 per cent occupancy when the schools in the Gulf countries closed for the holiday season during the spring break this year.
Among the various activities on offer, families visiting Sharjah have been particularly drawn to festivals and events including the Sharjah Light Festival, the Sharjah Water Festival and the Sharjah International Book Festival. Each year these events have been growing in size, attracting more and more families.
At the core of Sharjah’s tourism roadmap, SCTDA is organising a family focused event, the Sharjah International Family Tourism Conference, which will be taking place towards the end of the year.
This dedicated event will feature training workshops and networking activities, and will be attended by hotel and tourism experts, travel industry, celebrity speakers, ministerial delegations, heads of tourism authorities and departments from the region and abroad.
